There are 65 sick people in nine states, according to the CDC. These states are California, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin. We have found most of the cases in Wisconsin and Illinois. Of the 63 cases with enough information to make a report, 24 people have been hospitalised. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported.

The bigger picture

The United States is recalling more and more food, which is a worrying trend. This salmonella outbreak is part of that trend. According to a report from April, the number of food recalls has reached a level not seen since the COVID-19 pandemic. A report from the U.S. Public Interest Research Group Education Fund says that recalled foods have caused 1,100 illnesses and six deaths just in 2023. The recent egg recall is just one more sign that food safety is still a big problem.

What does Salmonella do?

Salmonella bacteria in food can make you sick. Usually, people experience diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps six hours to six days after consuming contaminated food or drink. Most people recover on their own within a week, but some individuals—particularly young children, older adults, and those with weaker immune systems—may become more ill and require medical treatment or hospitalization.

You shouldn’t eat any eggs in your fridge that have these labels on them. Instead, dispose of them immediately or consume them.
